The 11th Maruti Suzuki Raid de Himalaya 2009 is once again oversubscribed. Flagging off from Shimla the rally will run the Western Himalaya from Lahaul to Ladakh, Kargil, Zanskar to finally end at Srinagar. The rally will start on 5th October and conclude on the 13th October, 2009. A high level meeting was held here today to finalize the arrangements under the Chairmanship of Principal Secretary Youth Services and Sports Shri V.C. Pharkha.
Shri V.C. Pharkha said that each department connected with the arrangements relating to safe rally should make full arrangements to make it a success.
Over 130 teams are likely to take part in the world's highest mountain rally . The Indian army is back in force along with Team Thunderbolt and the newly assembled Team W+K. Apart from the usual team wars there are also the private entries which form the backbone of the Raid. Ranging from all the four corners of the country from Arunachal to Cochin the event draws the best from all parts of India.
This year will see the use of Geoterrestrial GPRS tracking on the Raid to keep an eye on the cars. Hopefully this would lead to a faster emergency response in the event of a mishap. There are over 6 all ladies teams including two teams having 'less abled' participants. Their courage to take on the Himalayas is admirable and will be on test every day of the rally.
The governments of both Himachal Pradesh and J&K are supporting this tourism initiatives besides sponsorship by Maruti Suzuki.
