The Department of Applied Sciences & Humanities, National Institute of Technology, Hamirpur and Plasma Science Society of India (PSSI) organized a “National Workshop on Plasma Surface-Interactions and Processing (NWPSIP- 09)” at National Institute of Technology, Hamirpur (H.P.) during May 25-27, 2009.
Applications of industrial plasma processing and modification of materials are growing considerably in recent years. The innovative applications in new areas are generating interest in the society at large and impacting industries in various working domains. It is therefore, necessary to make young scientific and technological human resource aware about the current
emerging situation in plasma processing and inspire them to contribute to the R & D and new product development in the field of plasma-surface interactions and processing.
The ‘National Workshop on Plasma-Surface Interactions and Processing’, provided an opportunity to the young scientists, engineers and research scholars to interact with experts in the field to gain knowledge and to exploit the ‘plasma’ as a tool to develop, improve and expand plasma based applications.
India’s participation in International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) programme has generated new opportunities and challenges in the field of materials R & D. Understanding Plasma – Materials interaction and plasma processing is going to play a crucial role in this programme. Couple of invited talks in this area were also present. The workshop also covered topics like Basics of Industrial Plasma, Plasma Systems and Techniques for Plasma Processing, Industrial Applications of Plasma Processing in the areas of Engineering, Textiles, Electronics,
Nano-Materials, Biomaterials, Environment, Space, Automotive, Nuclear etc. and Plasma-Materials Interactions for Fusion Applications.
Plasma Science Society of India (PSSI), one of the organizers of this workshop, has been established in 1978 with the objective to promote and popularize plasma science in India. This objective can be achieved by Arranging lectures/ conferences/workshops on various aspects of plasma science & technology. In consonance with this objective, PSSI organized NWPSIP-09 in association with NIT, Hamirpur at Hamirpur (HP). During this workshop eminent scientists and distinguished academicians like Dr. A K Das from Bhaba Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai; Dr. S Mukherjee, FCIPT, Institute for Plasma Research - Gandhinagar (Gujrat); Prof. A K Ganguly, Indian Institute of Technology – Delhi; Dr. Indrani Banerjee, Birla Institute of Technology – Mesra (Ranchi), Mr. Vishal Jain, Dr. Balasubramanian, Dr. J Govindarajan, Dr. Suryakant B. Gupta, Dr. P. M. Raole, Mr. C. Jariwala, Dr. Sameer S. KhirwadKar, Shri.
P.K. Atrey , Dr. Ravi Kumar A.V., Shri. A. Satya Prasad, Dr. G. Ravi, all from Insitute for Plasma Research – Gandhinagar (Gujrat ) visited the Institute to deliver expert talks on the topics like: Emerging Trends in Thermal Plasma Devices and Technology, Low Pressure Plasma Processing
Systems and Applications, Thin Film Deposition Using Reactive Magnetron Sputtering, Basic Discharge Mechanisms in Plasma Sources for Plasma Processing, Disposal of Waste and Energy Recovery using Environment Friendly Plasma Pyrolysis Technology, Plasma Process for Nanomaterial Synthesis, Diagnostics for Plasma Processing, High Voltage Pulsed Power Sources for Plasma Processing Applications, Plasma - Materials Interaction for Fusion Applications, Hydrogenated Silicon Thin Film Processing by VHF (55 MHz) Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapour Deposition for Photovoltaic applications, Divertor System of Tokamak (fusion
reactor): Materials and their Interaction with plasma.
About sixty participants from different institutes across the country attended this National Workshop. Organising Committee included Chairman: Dr. P. M. Raole, Institute for Plasma Research; Co-Chairman: Dr. Y. D. Sharma, (HOD) Applied Sc. & Hum. Deptt; Convener:Dr. Kuldeep Kumar Sharma, NIT- Hamirpur; Co-Convener: Dr. Rajesh Kumar Sharma NIT-Hamirpur. The workshop was inaugurated by senior scientist Dr. A.K.Das from Laser and Plasma Technology Division, BARC (Mumbai). The chief guest for the closing ceremony
was Prof. I. K. Bhat, Director NIT Hamirpur (H.P.).
